About the Ohio Valley Region SCCA

The Ohio Valley Region (OVR) is a regional chapter of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), a national, member-driven organization dedicated to motorsports enthusiasts. Centered primarily in Central Ohio, OVR serves as a vibrant community for anyone looking to safely and legally enjoy car culture, precision driving, and wheel-to-wheel competition.

Whether someone wants to drive a street car to its limits against the clock, build a dedicated race car, or get up close to the action as a trackside worker, OVR provides the platform, training, and community to make it happen.

What We Do: Core Programs

OVR organizes a wide variety of events throughout the year, catering to all experience levels from total novices to seasoned racing veterans:

  • Autocross (Solo®): Held in large paved areas like open lots, Autocross is a precision driving event where drivers compete against the clock on a course defined by traffic cones. It is an incredibly accessible and safe way to learn vehicle control and experience high-speed cornering with zero risk of hitting anything but rubber cones.

  • Rallycross: Very similar to Autocross, but taken off-road. Drivers test their car-handling skills against the clock on unpaved surfaces like dirt, mud, or snow, emphasizing car control on low-traction surfaces.

  • Track Events / Performance Driving Experience (PDX): These are non-competitive, instructional events held on real road courses. Drivers bring their daily drivers or sports cars to learn performance handling and advanced driving techniques from qualified instructors in a structured, safe environment without the pressure of official timing.

  • Road Racing: For those looking for the ultimate adrenaline rush, OVR hosts wheel-to-wheel club racing on dedicated road courses, featuring multiple classes of highly competitive sports cars fighting for the checkered flag.

  • Volunteering & Race Operations: You don’t have to be behind the wheel to be part of the team. OVR trains volunteers for critical trackside roles including flagging and communications, tech inspection, timing and scoring, grid operations, and safety crews, giving enthusiasts the best seats in the house.

A Brief History of OVR SCCA

The history of the Ohio Valley Region is deeply intertwined with the growth of sports car racing in the Midwest:

Founding and Early Years

The Ohio Valley Region received its official SCCA charter in 1949. In those early post-war years, sports car racing was rapidly gaining traction across the United States. OVR quickly established itself as a cornerstone for local automotive enthusiasts, organizing rallies, auto-shows, and early speed events.

The Mid-Ohio Connection

For over sixty years, OVR’s identity has been inextricably linked to the iconic Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio. When the track opened in 1962, it immediately became the natural home for OVR’s road racing and performance driving events. Over the decades, OVR has hosted major national events at the venue, including the prestigious SCCA National Championship Runoffs and regular stops for the Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA Super Tour.

A Community Legacy

Beyond the racetrack, OVR has always been defined by its strong social community. In the 1980s, the region’s monthly meetings (affectionately known as “socializers”) were famously held at the Red Roof Inn corporate headquarters—hosted by racing driver and team owner Jim Trueman—featuring legendary guest speakers like Bobby Rahal and Scott Pruett.

Today, OVR continues that legacy of camaraderie, pairing intense trackside action with a welcoming, family-like atmosphere where members swap stories, share tuning advice, and give back through charity events, teen safe-driving programs, and community toy drives.

Our Mission: To satisfy a driver’s need for speed by fostering a community of motorsport enthusiasts through high-intensity racing, precision driving, and vehicle control learning experiences in a safe, legal, and supportive environment.
